Race Against Racism 5k

As expected, I woke up horribly nervous for today's race.  I fell asleep shortly after midnight, woke up at 2am when my air conditioning turned off, woke up again at 6am when my best friend Stephen texted me "good luck" and then literally jumped out of bed at 8am when my alarm went off.  I guess I was in the deep, REM state because I thought I was having a heart attack - my heart was beating so fast and I couldn't catch my breathe.  Then I started to panic and began to question if my race was starting in 30 minutes or an hour and 30 minutes.
I had to actually sit down for about five minutes until I could think straight and get the strength to walk to my living room and find the papers telling me when/where the race was.  I hate when I wake up like that.
I put on all of my gear - and I warn you - I got up and got dressed - I don't get all dolled up for races...
I put on my gray jacket because it was still slightly chilly.  I ran to my office and googled the directions to the race since it was a new race site for me.  As I was sitting in my office, I could hear the wind slamming against my windows and it made me nervous - was I going to be able to handle running in that?
I decided I could do it (along with all the support via facebook from friends) and set off for the race.
This is the weather that greeted me when I got to my car.  Again, didn't really help the nerves I already had! I got behind the wheel and started driving downtown.  Thankfully I left earlier than usual because the directions I printed were not good and I ended up a few blocks off from where I needed to be.
I finally found the location and parked my car.  I took a deep breath, put on my "lucky" bib and hoped for the best.
I walked to the table to pick up my race shirt - very simple gray shirt with their logo and the pledge against racism.  Walked back to the car and tossed it in the trunk and then went back to stretch.  I arrived way earlier than needed so I got to watch the fun run (a little boy won at an 8:08 mile) and enjoyed watching the basketball and baseball team mascots play with one another and run with the Fun Run finalists.  While I was watching the race I chewed on a few of the berry Jelly Belly's to get some caffeine before the race.

I know that most places will tell you to drive or at least walk your course before you race so you know where you are going.  I never do that.  I know that if I did, I wouldn't do it.  I'd rather just run and experience it as I go.  Especially with this race - I knew I would have a ton of hills and I didn't want to scare myself when I didn't need to.
Finally it was time to race.  I set my iShuffle on non-shuffle setting and reminded myself I had to cross by or before "Survivor" by Destiny's Child because that's my 35 minute mark.  I've been in a country mood since I got back from the Canyon so this mix is a lot of country with some rap.  A new thing for me but it was a good mix.
I started out pretty easily - not pushing too hard but definitely feeling the pain in my legs.  It made me thankful that I had taken 2 days off because I'm sure I would have hurt worse had I not.  To be quite honest, I wanted to walk before I even hit the first hill but I just couldn't do it.  I kept telling myself "you will not walk before you hit at least one hill!" so I kept pushing.
I started realizing people were slowly falling behind me so I just figured in my head they couldn't handle the hills and that's why they were falling behind.  I never thought that it was because I was running faster than they were.
I hit the first hill and it was kinda steep - a little higher than I do around campus.  I pushed and hit the top where it evened out a little bit.  We went down a slight hill and then hit another one.  The upside was with the third hill I passed the first 2 runners so I knew I was hitting near the turn around.  That made me push even harder than I had been - I knew I was close.  I told myself I'd walk when I got to the turn around at the bottom of the hill.
Then I hit the turn around and it was me and another woman.  I couldn't let her see me walk after we made it that far so I kept pushing.  A few minutes later I realized she had fallen behind so I used that to push me farther - I could beat her and she was obviously a good runner!
Once I crested the top of the second hill I started telling myself I knew I had only one more hill and it wasn't a bad one and then it was all downhill.  Was I really going to walk when it was downhill?  Of course not!  So I kept pushing even though I didn't think I had anything left in me.  My face felt like it was on fire and I wanted to die.  As I hit the second to last corner I saw my car.  Then it hit me - I was one block away from the finish line.  I had to pass my car and run up a short hill to the finish line and I'd be done.  I knew the last three people I had passed on the hill were closing in on me so as I hit the final corner I started to dig in and say to myself "you are almost there.  You can do this! Don't fail me now!" outloud - partly to help psych myself up and also to freak those around me out a little bit to my advantage.
I pushed so hard on that hill and about half way up the hill I looked up and saw the clock... 28:30.  I said outloud "you will cross before 29 minutes" and shot up the hill even harder.  I could hear the crowd screaming and it fueled me even more.  I crossed at 28:55, received my bottle of water and walked straight to a bench where I sat with my head down for about two minutes.  I wasn't sure if I was going to throw up or pass out.  After sitting quietly for a few minutes and gaining the ability to walk again, I grabbed an apple and headed back to my car.
That's when I took this photo:
I still can't believe I ran under 29 minutes!  That's only my second time doing it.  I can't wait to see how I placed overall and in my age range.  I'm not worried about the next two races - I wanted to do under 29 for at least one of these three races and I did so now I can relax. : )
Tomorrow is the OKC half and full marathon.  I know Erica will kick butt tomorrow - I can't wait to hear how she does!  And it makes me even more excited about the possibility of running the half here in Tulsa in November!

Pre-race nervousness

So finally a "real" post tonight.  I apologize again for falling behind - things have been crazy as it's the end of the year for me with the main part of my job.
I've been hitting the gym pretty hard the past few weeks and tried to step back a little bit this week due to my race tomorrow.  I had planned to do 2 miles Monday, 1.5 on Tuesday and 3 on Wednesday and 2 on Thursday.  Instead I did Monday, Tuesday and as planned and ran 1 mile on Wed just to stretch my legs.  Since we added some new weight machines this past week I gave my arms a little break and focused a little more on my legs and abs earlier in the week.  On Thursday I skipped any form of running and walked the track a little over a half mile until my final Zumba class started.  I really hope they offer the class in the summer - I just love it!
Today I ran errands and finally found the time to register for my race tomorrow.

I have to be honest - I am so nervous!!  I haven't raced since the Sweetheart 5k back in late February and although I've built up my miles since then as well as my time, I'm so afraid I'm not going to hit my goal!
I am setting a hard goal of sub-35 and a soft goal of sub-30.  I don't think I'll hit the sub-30 because I've never done this course and I am sure it will have a few hills since it's downtown.  I haven't been working on my hills so we'll see how I do.
As usual, I have all my stuff laid out...
And I'll be trying out my new shoes for the first time during a race.
They have been working great all week so this will be the big test for me I guess. : )
While I was registering I remembered to pick up some new bags of Jelly Belly's for pre-race as well as some goodies I plan on sending to Stephen to try out during his long runs to see what he likes.
I had them laughing when I picked up my packet.  She handed me number 76 and I looked at her and I said "I know this is so dumb but... is 77 still available?  That's kinda my lucky number and I'm hoping it brings me luck."  She laughed and said she totally understood and gave me my number!!
So here's hoping it brings me a good time!  The race isn't until 9.30am which is kinda late for a spring/summer race so I'll be bringing a hat in case it is super sunny.  I have 2 alarms set for 8am figuring I'll hit downtown by 8.45am and still have at least 45 minutes to walk around, stretch and calm down.
It's weird but I'm looking forward to it because it's the only race out of the next 3 that I'll be doing alone.  Eryn is going to run the Cinco de Mayo with me next Friday night and then Joey is going to come out and cheer me on for the Full Moon 5k (it was the first race she supported me at a year ago) for posterity.
I updated my iShuffle, bought some new songs (I treat myself to at least 4 new songs each race) and feel somewhat confident so we'll see how I do!  Keep your fingers crossed for me! : )

Day 24 - A picture of something you wish you could change

I think the only thing I would change (and hope to within the next year) is the distance between me and my friends/family.  I love my job, love my staff and am happy where I am but I hate missing my godchildren growing up and want to be able to see my mother more than once a year.  I am looking forward to eventually moving back to the East Coast and living within 10 hours of everyone I love instead of 15-24hours away.

Day 23 - A Picture of Your Favorite Book

This book is one of the few "good" things I have from my first relationship.  I didn't go to a high school where we read "the classics" - I had one teacher focus on Shakespeare and another focus on English Lit classics and the two years in the middle focused on the English language rather than literature.
So one of the things my ex did was at the beginning of our relationship was to hand me a list of books I "had to read" before I died.  To be quite honest, I bought a few of the books and haven't really gotten past the first few chapters in many of them.
But, for some reason, this one stood out for me.  I read the entire book in a few days and just loved it.  I can't explain it, I don't know why, but I just love this book so much.
And as those who are close to me know, it has become a tradition of sorts that if you have really impacted my life, you will receive a copy of this book from me.  Not a new copy - no, I will visit hand me down stores until I find a copy (usually this cover version) and will give it along with a note inside the front cover.  Those of you who have received a copy - you should feel special.  Not many have.

Day 22 - A picture of something you wish you were better at

I wish I was better when it comes to knitting.  I tend to stick with blankets and scarves because they are easy and I tend to not screw them up too much.  I'd love to learn how to make those amazing patterns you see in yarn stores but I never seem to find/make the time to take a class to learn.  It is a goal of mine to learn how to knit intricate blankets so I can make them for my future children and grandchildren when they are born.

Crazy Weather = Crazy Runs!

So the weather here has been so up and down lately it is ridiculous!  We were going from 80's to 40's within 24 hours a few weeks ago and now it's been raining non-stop with golf ball sized hail.  Today seems to have the potential to be sunny but as a precaution we've postponed our grill out we had planned.
I hate weather like this because I never want to go out and be active.  Rain here is very dreary and turns the entire sky dark and cold.  Who wants to run in that?  My hope is that the weatherman is right and it gets nice over the next few days so I have a chance to get some outside runs in!
This is my last week of Spring exercise classes.  I have Zumba tonight which is always fun.  I'm planning to get a 2 mile run and hopefully some weights in before class.  I've really enjoyed picking Zumba back up this semester and here's hoping they'll offer it this summer so I can continue.  If not, I have the Wii version but it's not as much fun doing it alone.
Running has been easier each passing week.  Since January Eryn and I have worked very hard on building our mileage back up.  Last week we made our first 3 mile straight run since prob December (outside of our 5k) and it felt so great!  I've been averaging just over 2 miles when I run by myself which is also an accomplishment.  I'm also working on my speed the nights I run alone.  I've been averaging between 9.30-10min mile which is where I was back in December.
I'm planning on running out to register for this weekends race today or tomorrow.  I'm so nervous about the hills downtown but I'm excited at the same time for the challenge.  My last 5k was back in Feb. after our snow storm so its been a while - longer than I usually like to go, but that couldn't be helped due to the Grand Canyon.
The goal for this race, if I can achieve it, is to be sub-35 (due to the hills).  My two races after that are pretty flat so I'm hoping to hit as close to sub-30 on those as possible.  Who knows... maybe I'll even set a new PR for the Full Moon (I ran it last year at 30:26).  That would be awesome.  But even if I have a higher time, I will still be proud of myself for at least doing it.  It will be my 3rd of 3 races in a month so I'll undoubtedly be exhausted at that point and need a few days off.
We'll see how this challenge goes!

Day 21 - A picture of something you wish you could forget

The only thing I wish I could forget would be my high school years.  I lived in a very small town and they weren't exactly... accepting of those they termed as "strangers" (people not born in town).  I was never accepted and was pretty much an outsider even when it came to my "friends" circle.

I didn't really get to be myself until college.  I am definitely one of those people who don't really have fond memories of high school.  I wasn't tortured/abused/picked on.  Just ignored and not noticed.  Thankfully it wasn't as traumatic as others have experienced.

Photos from my childhood are hard to come by.  My father loved the camera and took a million and one photos of us growing up but once he passed away my mother stopped taking photos.  It wasn't until I went to college that I picked up a camera again and started taking photos of my friends and my life.
But these are a few of my favorites from when I was an awkward kid...

Day 18 - A picture of your biggest insecurity

For me, that's what my stomach looks like and slightly my weight.  At my thinnest, I have been a size 6 (under 140lbs) and at my heaviest, I've been close to (if not over) 200lbs.  I stopped weighing myself at that point until I started losing weight again.
Food has always played a big part with my emotions - if I was upset about a problem concerning others, I used to eat.  If it dealt with me and I was upset about something I'd done, I would not eat and just force myself to get past the literal hunger pains until I moved on from the situation.
Now most of my insecurities come from my distorted body image.  I am constantly told in the office that I'm "thin" or "tiny" and it's hard to hear.  I don't see what they see when I look in the mirror.  I'm finally getting to a place where I am happy with how I look, which is good, but I don't think I'll ever see myself as "skinny" or "small" - but just almost average.
Oddly enough, my main insecurity is my belly.  I am fine with the rest of my body - I just feel like my belly will never be where I want it.  I don't want it to be a 6pack - just a little more toned/harder than it is right now.  I don't need to be thin like this photo...
But I want to not have it push out as much as it does.  Just a comfort thing.  And of course, something that no one else but me sees.
