Sleep... please see me soon!

So it's 3am and I am not even remotely tired.  I went into my office around 10pm to catch up on some work and when I looked up at the clock again it was 1am.  I figured at that point it was time to go home.  That lead to me laying on the couch and watching "My Ghost Story" followed by the ending of "You've Got Mail."
I love movies like "You've Got Mail" because they romanticize New York.  My mother lived there for over 12 years and I loved to visit, but after more than 2 weeks I was pretty much over the city.  I'm definitely a country girl at heart - the exact opposite of my mother and sister.  They went from the city to just outside of Miami.  Miami I completely and totally dislike.  The people there are worse than NY drivers!  Give me the mountains of Carolina, Tennessee or Georgia and I'm in heaven.
I figured I'd try blogging in hopes that it makes my eyes tired and helps me sleep soon.  We'll see how this goes.
So Eryn and I are going to sign up for the Half Marathon training this week.  I believe they start mid-June and with vacations and such I'll end up missing 2 long runs but I figure I'll make them up while I'm gone.  I believe one will be a 3 or 4 mile run and the other will prob be closer to 5 or 6.  I'm a big fan of travelling with the running shoes so it shouldn't be a problem.
We are up to around 3 miles at night now.  I'm going to actually walk our route tomorrow and then add in when we do the additional loops to see just how far we are getting and where we need to add more.  It's been getting easier which is nice.  Eryn swears it is because we are working with more weights and I'm sure she's right.  Our campus is not hilly by any means but we've managed to work a few minor hills into our runs to help keep our legs fresh and used to them.  I'm especially going to need the practice if I do the Runaway 5k again.  That one has some killer hills right off the bat!
My hope is that tomorrows walk has us at least at 2.5 miles when we run.  Whatever the total turns out to be, we usually feel like we can keep going so it's a good feeling either way.  We are both trying to bump our mileage up to at least 3.5 miles before we start the official training.  We're planning on running with the 11 min/mile team.  Although we usually run a 10 min/mile, we aren't used to 13.1 miles in any way, shape or form so we're figuring it is better to go with a slower group and have to bump up rather than bump down.
The fact that our runs are getting easier makes me feel like I'm much more prepared for this half than I was last year.  My goal is to do this one and possibly the OKC half in April next year.  That way I'll end my running career here with 2 half marathons under my belt.  That would be so nice!
If that happens, I'm going to look into doing the Disney half the following year which will give both Stephen and I time to save up for it (it's pretty costly) and also give Sarah time to train up to the half (or the 5k if she's not ready).  I'm excited at the thought of having my best friends at the finish line with me.  That would be so wonderful!
Other than our nightly runs (it's already getting horribly hot here until around 8pm), we're back in the gym with weights and abs.  I love doing ab crunches and feeling it the next day.  I feel like I can already see a difference which makes me so happy.  Zumba starts this week so I need to go in on Monday and register for the class.  I'll be happy to get back into Zumba class as well as running.  Makes me feel sane again.  And gives me an hour a few times a week to laugh at myself.
I asked my mother to talk to my aunts and see if they would be willing to make me a quilt when I leave here so I can have all of my running t-shirts together.  I hope they will - it would be so wonderful to be able to have that for my children and show them how hard I worked when I lived in OK.
My hope is to return home by next summer - not really picky on the state, but I miss the South and am ready to be closer to my family and friends again.  Three years is a long time to be away - not matter how much I love my job.
Well, going to try to sleep now.  The only good thing is I shouldn't be super tired tomorrow so I might actually get to sleep at a reasonable time on a Sunday night!  Night all.

Full Moon 5k and race recaps

First, I apologize for disappearing for so long.  If you read my Twitter you know how busy I've been.  I had to close my building for the year, do all the billing and now am in the process of finishing closing paperwork before going into conference season.  Never ending cycle of my job but I love it so I can't complain too much.   Photo challenge will be finished out this week - as soon as I have a chance to find photos for the last days.
In the meantime, my running challenge to myself has been fulfilled!
I set a goal of 3 5k's in 3 weeks and did it!  Not only did I do it, but I set some amazing new times in the process!  How sweet is that?!
  So my challenge was this:
I started with the Race Against Racism on April 30th.  It was the only morning run I had.  The next week I ran the Cinco de Mayo night race.  This weekend was the Full Moon night race.  This race was especially important to me as it was the first race I was actually able to "re-run" since last year.  I wanted to do the St. Patty's Day 5k which would have been my 1 year anniv of racing in OK but I was at the Grand Canyon so it wasn't possible.
RAR and CdM were super hard races - full of hills and hard terrain.  Full Moon, I thought, would be the "easiest" because I already knew the course and it was all flat with the exception of a tiny hill at the end.
Boy, was I wrong!  Full Moon was the hardest of them all!  I decided to wear my standard outfit that I've been using at each race - tank top, sports bra, thinner running shorts and my gray Gap hoodie.

Sorry for the dirty mirror. : /  Should probably clean that soon.
The night was pretty chilly which I wasn't expecting but made wearing the hoodie better.  The crowd was huge this race - over 2,000 runners!  It was hard getting a good start with so many slower runners around me so I pushed harder than I probably should have when I started to pass out some people.  Because of this,  I wanted to walk about a mile in.  My legs were on fire the entire time and by the second mile I just shut my brain off and decided to run until I couldn't run anymore.  I kept repeating songs and praying I wasn't going to be over last year's time (30:31).
I also had to mentally prepare myself because for some reason, at the Full Moon 5k they always grill burgers and hot dogs next to the finish line.  This, I say with everything in my being, is the worst thing to smell when you are dying of exhaustion and just want to collapse.  Last year it hit me and I almost threw up while running.
It wasn't as bad this year because I made sure to be on the other side of the street.  It also helped that Joey and Tim were there and on that side of the street so she could take photos of me (I never get in any of photos when the professionals take them).
As I got closer to the finish line I thought the sign said "26:...) and I had to rub my eyes and saw it said 28 so I knew I had to push harder to cross before it hit 30.  I dug in deep and just floored it past three people and crossed when the clock said 29:27.  I was slightly disappointed but then Tim reminded me that I didn't cross the start line until almost a minute in.  That made me feel better - and meant I may have been under 29 minutes which is awesome!
As it turns out, I did very well (for me!).  Here's a break down of all the races:
Full Moon 5k (3rd race)
  Overall - 807 out of 2,005 runners
  Division - 49 out of 79
Sex - 262 out of 1,068 women   (in the top 25% of finishers)
Final time - 28:35 (best time yet!!)  Average time was 31:25 for race
  Pace - 8:55min/mile pace

Cinco de Mayo (2nd race)
  Overall - 312 out of 741
  Division - 24 out of 69
  Sex - 113 out of 415
Final time - 31:05 (Ran with Eryn at her pace)  Average time was 34:11 for race
  Pace - 9:42min/mile pace

Race Against Racism (1st race)
Overall - 50th to cross out of 153 to race
Division - 3rd out of 13 (age range)  *especially proud of this fact*
Sex - 14th out of 81 female runners  *also super proud of this*
Final time - 28:52     Average time was 35:08 for race
  Pace - 9:01min/mile

I have to say that I never thought I'd see the day I'd be consistently running under 30 minutes, let alone 29 minutes!  I really owe that all to my old trainer.  His constant pushing me to do better has stuck with me since I don't work with him any more and it's pushing me to be better and work harder than ever.
Eryn and I are planning to start our training for the 1/2 Marathon in November soon.  I'm still nervous but I'm not looking at time with the race - just the goal of finishing, hopefully without walking.  But that is months away and we'll see.
And I picked my final race before I take my summer break - I think I'm going to redo the Runaway 5k.  I remember it almost killing me last year with the killer hill you start on but I am going to attempt it again this year and hopefully will do better than last year's race.

Monday Morning Blues

So Eryn texted me late Sunday night to see if I wanted to hit the gym on Monday morning before work since she isn't available most Monday afternoons.  I agreed knowing I never fall asleep on Sunday nights until after 1am.  I never sleep on Sunday nights for some reason.
I could barely see when my alarm went off at 7.45am and for a second I considered canceling on her but managed to drag my sleepy butt out of bed anyway and got dressed.  A few minutes later she texted me to let me know she was on her way to pick me up.
We hit the gym and I begged off from running because I didn't want to put any extra pressure on my knees for at least 2 days after my race.  And here I thought I was being all smart about resting my body!
We decided to do a circuit of the new machines we've been using - mostly arms and some legs.  I'm trying to switch up the free weights and arm machines so I can work all areas a little more evenly.  The free weights I use a 9lb but on the machines I'm between 20-30lbs and I know within a few weeks I'll be better because I used to do close to 50lbs a few years ago.
After I did all the arm machines I went through the legs.  All were fine and then I went over to the one where you lay down to do a leg curl.  For some reason I was... nervous?  to use to it.  I laid down and lifted my legs and felt this horrible pain in my left knee.  I dropped my leg quickly and got off the machine so I could try to walk it out.  The pain started shooting even more when I walked on it.  Not a good sign!
I left the gym shortly after that to shower and get ready for work.  I also wrapped my knee up and put some mineral ice on it throughout the day in hopes of making it feel better.  Today it doesn't seem as tender so we'll see.  I really wanted to register for the race today but I may wait until tomorrow just to make sure I can run on it.
Any suggestions for care would be greatly appreciated so please feel free!
In other news, the director of our gym sent me the summer list of classes and Zumba is coming back!!  I'm super stoked for this - it will be with my old instructor so I know it will involve Zumba as well as abs at the end.  Definitely signing up for it and can't wait to start. This summer is going to be great.

This means a lot to me - my beautiful staff of 2010-2011.  They are a great group of beautiful, strong women - some of who are graduating in less than a week and moving onto bigger and better things.  These girls have helped me grow as a supervisor, confidant and a woman this year and I owe them so much.  I'm very blessed to have worked with them this year. : )

Placement on yesterday's race

I just checked my placement - which made me even more proud of myself yesterday!!

 Here's the rundown:
Overall - 50th to cross out of 153 to race
Division - 3rd out of 13 (age range)  *especially proud of this fact*
Sex - 14th out of 81 female runners  *also super proud of this*
  Final time - 28:52 for 3.2 miles
  Pace - 9:01min/mile

It's a minute slower than my PR (27.58 in November) but I am so happy with this time!  It's my best since my foot issues in January and it's because of all the hard work both of my running buddies have been pushing me to achieve.  I owe them both so much for pushing me with each run!

Best part - the bib I didn't take - #76 - ended up going to the first woman to cross the finish line!!  I laughed when I saw that.  I'm glad both bibs were "lucky."
